Authentic abbey beer from a living monastery

Het Klooster Beer is not a brand concept or a licensed abbey label.
It is an authentic monastery beer brewed by a living monastic community that resides and works aboard a floating monastery ship in the Netherlands.

Our community originates from the Georgian Orthodox monastic tradition, where monks and nuns historically lived not only in stone monasteries, but also in mountains, caves, forests and remote places. In that tradition, the monastery ship Elia II serves today as a place of prayer, work and hospitality.

A real monastery — not a marketing story

Many beers marketed as “abbey beer” are produced by commercial breweries under historical references or licensing agreements. Het Klooster Beer differs fundamentally.

Our beer is brewed by monks, connected to a real monastic life, with daily rhythm shaped by work, responsibility and tradition. The brewery is not separated from the monastery — it is part of it.

This makes Het Klooster Beer one of the very few examples in the Netherlands where abbey beer is produced within an active monastic environment.

Brewing on a floating monastery ship

The monastery ship Elia II is moored in Dinteloord, North Brabant.
On board, the community lives, works and receives guests.

Beer production follows a careful process rooted in monastic craftsmanship:
small batches, natural ingredients, patience and attention. The focus is not on mass production, but on character, balance and integrity of flavour.

The beers include styles such as Blond, Tripel, Quadrupel and other distinctive recipes developed within the community.

Visiting the monastery ship

Visitors are welcome to experience this unique setting.
Depending on the arrangement, guests may:
